National 988 Lifeline Launched in Ohio

Beginning on July 16, 2022, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255) launched an easier-to-remember way to access crisis resources, 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline . Based on the most recent Youth Risk Behaviors Survey from 2019, 8.9 percent of youth in grades 9-12 reported that they had made at least one suicide attempt in the past 12 months. CDC Wonder online Database reports that in 2020, suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death for 10 – 14 year olds and 3rd for 15-24 year olds in the United States. Ohioans who are experiencing a mental health or addiction crisis, and their family members, can call, text, or chat the 988 number to reach a trained counselor who can offer free and confidential help and support 24/7. Ohio’s Mental Health & Addiction Services provides more information on 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline as a component of their continuum of crisis services and important links to community resources.

The new 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline does not replace the 911 Emergency Line. It is important to know that a mental health emergency is a life-threatening situation. Some examples of emergencies where there is imminent risk to someone’s life include a suicide attempt in progress, an injury that needs immediate medical attention, or an apparent drug overdose. Local law enforcement, fire or emergency medical services will be dispatched when you call 911. Contrastingly, when contacting 988 for a mental health crisis a trained professional will answer to assist and support you and link you to additional care as necessary. Some examples of crisis include talking about suicide, planning harm to self or others, significant depression, or anxiety symptoms.  The Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services has developed this handout with more examples of when to use 988 vs 911 as well as a list of FAQs for community partners, professionals, and others looking to better understand 988.
