Access to Spacers Improved for Patients with Asthma

Patients insured by an Ohio Medicaid plan can now access two spacers per year without the need for a prior authorization. The previous quantity limit for spacers was one per year. Asthma patients should use metered dose inhalers with a spacer or mask/spacer to assist with administration technique and deliver more medication to the lungs. Most patients younger than 12-years old do not have the lung strength or coordination to use a breath-actuated inhaler, and therefore metered dose inhalers with a spacer is the preferred option. If you have questions about what metered dose inhalers are available and covered for your Ohio Medicaid patients, view the Partners For Kids’ Inhaled Steroid Table.
